Join W2K to 2K3 domain - stymied

I have a Windows 2003 server fully patched and updated. The domain is in
Windows 2000 Mixed mode. I have a HP DesignJet scanner that uses a Windows
2000 based controller. I am trying to join the controller PC to the domain
and I get an error stating that "The domain name is invalid or the domain
does not exist". Everything I have read points to a DNS problem, but when I
run NSLOOKUP on the w2k controller it resolves to the DNS server that is
running on the domain controller with no problem. What could I be missing?
Thanks a million!

Hi Bob, Thanks for the reply. I tried the suggestions in the link you left,
but without success. If I open IE and type in http://www.Google.com the
status bar shows "Connecting to <ip.add.re.ss>" but the page cannot be found.
It resolves the name no trouble but cannot pull the page. It can also resolve
any of the local host names on the LAN to a correct IP address. The W2K
client is running SP4

Also, I meant to say that I have been trying using FQDN to join the domain,
but it generates the same error.

Posting back with the results of ipconfig /all and nslookup on the DC may
help.

Hello SeriousSam,

You are right, this is usually a DNS issue. However we will need some
configuration information to he;lp determine if your DNS setup is correct:

As Bob asked, please post an unedited ipconfig /all from the device and from
one of your domain controllers.
Are any of the DCs mulithomed (more than one NIC or multi IPs)?
Is the AD DNS domain name single label (domain vs the required minimum of
domain.com, etc)?
Event log errors on the DCs?

Thanks,

Hello SeriousSam,

Please post an unedited ipconfig /all from the DC and the new server you
like to add.
