It makes sense. But it isn't essential. A remote user can access
domain resources as long as the user has valid credentials on the domain.
(That is, the remote connection sends the domain name, username and password
which is valid in the domain). You cannot join the office domain if you are
already joined to some other domain, such as a home network domain.
If you really want to log in and be a domain member, you can use the
"login using a dialup connection" option on the login screen. If the machine
is a domain member (and the VPN "dialup" connection is configured for all
users), you will get the option to log in to the domain using the dialup
connection, rather than do a normal local login.
