how j2me relates to WAP gateway

hello to all,

I am a newbie.
I am studing j2me.
I want to know that is there any relation between j2me and wap gateway
when j2me access servlets.
Some say wap gateway only comes into the picture when wml comes.

In short, For j2me to function , does it needs the services of wap
gateway.
