It's That Netgear DG814 UDP Problem Again.

Has anyone carried out any detailed testing to tie down the problem that
many people (but not all) appear to have with the Netgear DG814 and UDP
traffic? I'm investigating this myself and thought I'd post my findings so
far. Please comment to this post with your system settings along with
whether or not you are experiencing the problems.

To clarify, the problem appears to be that large ammounts of UDP traffic
will cause the Netgear DG814 router to crash. The end user is normally made
aware of this if they are using P2P software (ala eDonkey) or multiplayer
Internet games such as Half Life or Return To Castle Wolfenstein. In the
case of the games they will generally pull down the list of servers and then
fail to connect to any of the servres you choose, on quiting the game you
will find that your computer (or any other connected to the router) cannot
connect to the Internet. The router has to be switched off and back on again
to recover.

Firmware version: 4.3, 4.8, 4.9

Internet IP: From ISP
DNS Address: From ISP
Multiplexing Method: VC-Based
Virtual Circuit
VPI 0
VCI 38
MTU Size: Default 1458

Computer which is experiencing the problem is not configured as the 'Default
DMZ Server'.

ISP: Netscalibur.co.uk

Computer: Home built
Operating System: Windows XP
Network card: 10mb
Memory: 1Gb

While I realise that ultimately this is a Netgear problem I know that there
are some people that are running the DG814 without the problem so there must
be some combination of settings/OS/luck that will make it work. Before
upgrading to Windows XP I was able to play these same games on Windows 98
without a problem, does Windoes XP allow a greater number of UDP ports than
Windows 98? Is there a configurable limit within XP for the amount of
concurant open UDP ports? Am I just talking a bunch of rubbish?

I am continueing to investigate this and will be installing a spare drive
with Win 98 and one of the games to see if XP is part of the problem. Of
course I'll let you all know what I find.

Yes i am seeing this problem, but cannot offer any resolution at the
moment.

My internet connection is rock solid but, for some unknown reason,
everytime i fire up Wolfenstein Enemy Territory my connection drops
just as the list of servers appears. I have a Netgear DG814 router.
The connection drops and the router stops responding. I cannot even
access the router config website. I have to switch it on and off
before it recovers.
My internet connection is fine - i have no problems browsing - it just
fails with this game.

My PC is a Dell PIII 1000Mhz, with 512MB RAM, a GeForce2 GTS graphics
card, and a 100MB network card. I am running Windows 2000 (with
Service Pack 4).
It is interesting that this problem has only occurred in the last
month as, prior to this, the game worked successfully for many weeks.
The hardware and ISP (Freedom2surf) has not changed. The only software
that has changed is Windows, via the Windows Update site.
Also, I know BT has been working on my local exchange for the last few
months from time to time, but have not had any problems. Not sure if
its related?

In attempting to solve my problem with Wolftenstein Enemy Territory
crashing my Netgear DG814 router, I downloaded the latest beta driver
(v4.9 RC3 from www.netgear.fr). Unfortunately this did not make any
difference..

Fortunately, a little later, i discovered the latest patch for
Wolftenstein (v1.02). Installing this has now stopped the router from
crashing. My adsl connection is now working happily :-)
