ISPs and 'phone lines

With all the research for my friend's new connection (he's going for
Plusnet as the answers in t'other thread were so favourable, thank you),
I'm getting more interested in changing from Tiscrap as I'm worried that,
if the rats are jumping from one side, it'll go titsup.

Asked one ISP (that doesn't provide 'phone as well) and it said that it
could provide BB over a BT line only.
Now, if I pay rental to e.g The Phone Co-op, but it's not unbundled, can an
ISP provide BB on the same line? I can understand that LLU stops another
ISP doing so but don't know if just rental will.

Most of the ISPs that provide 'phone don't have suitable schemes for me:
they're aimed at evening and weekend calls (suits me mate) and I make most
of my calls during the day.

I'd like to choose an ISP and [perhaps] have the 'phoneline with anothe
company - is this possible? If not, I'd need the ability to use an override
provider and some ISPs don't allow that if they also provide the line.

Coming in at the end of your thread - I didn't see that either. Found
line+evenings/weekends but nowt for anyime.
One disadvantage with PN is that the call times are 60 minutes and I'm used
to 90 minutes.
Bit tempted by IDNet but too expensive for what I do.

Pity that PN has 3G or 15G - 8G would suit me.

I was looking at another ISP and the checking fo ravailability led straight
in to signing up! I want to jump ship but I'd like a lifeboat first!

Yes, true. Just that I don't like BT; certainly object to the principle of
'we're going to get your money whatever', AKA set-up fee.

Since the copper is provided by BT you might as well stick to them for
the phone line part of it all. You still have a choice who you pay for
calls and Internet though.

My phone is with the Post Office to whom I pay the line rental, but the line
is still BT's, it is a monthly contract.
My LLU BB ISP is Beunlimited, up to 24meg., this is a 3 month contract.
£17.50 month, does not slow down, very satisfied.

Watch out for contract lengths.

Right, so it can be done, just this particular ISP being awkward - or
ignorant, as twas a salesdroid.

It's titsup already, just compare it with a good ISP.

Suggestion. Take one month with Idnet (minimum contract - you can even use me
as a reference and get £10 off so it'll cost you bigger all - use the email in
my headers) and then cancel it and move to another mediocre provider.

You'll suddenly realise that why a quality service costs a few more bob.

Stick with BT for the phone line, despite their failings they're still the
best. DO NOT go the LLU route (if you know what means - if not ask).

There are some great ISPs out there and some so below par they should be SHOT
and buried, yet the prices vary little unless you want to save say £2. My
neighbour had HELL with TISCALI for TWO MONTHS when both his phone and BB were
mostly out of action and it cost him a FORTUNE in mobile calls. Plus Tiscali
NEVER call back.

I'm on LLU with Be I think their best thing since sliced bread, what should
I be finding wrong with them?
Unlimited download and speed is constant and not expensive at £17.50 month.
If I you tell me what's wrong and I find it happening to me, I will give
them the required 3 months notice, but doubt I will find better.
I have paid more and got speeds all over the place with my previous ISP.

By the way it is BTs line but I pay rental via Post Office telephone account
its a 1 month contract I can understand what their customer service are
saying.
BT wanted me to commit to 12 month at higher price and I could hardly tell
what was being said on phone to me. I had to put my questions in writing
and wait 10 days for a response.

Yes, Iunderstand that already.
This '30-day' trial business doesn't really work, as going back to the
original ISP isn't on.

I wasn't intending LLU, just renting the line via another company. It's
currently via Tiscali; my exchange has no unbundling at all.

Oh yes - so far I've been lucky and can also bodge things myself. My main
concern is if it does go wrong. I don't know where the 01... nos. end up,
but 1 experience suggests that any dimdroids in the UK are on par with
tothers.
