Can no configure windows 98 for internet. PC was configured for small LAN,
internet connection was via ISP router
(broadband, via cable). Now i moved in another location and there is another
ISP, via cableTV(broadband cable modem). ISP say, modem is already
preconfigured. Broadband cable modem Thomson TCM425, connected to my PC. (it
intended to share cable TV signal and internet). Internet signal come to
modem, but it looks that PC just do not see modem. IE Browser status bar
show 'Connecting to site: IP .. ..", but no any page loads.
All worked normally in my previous ISP internet (LAN, broadband connection),
I used this win98 box near five years in office and never had any problems.
ISP engineer can no solve problem still. First visit engineer has connected
modem and removed my previous connection settings,
and just set few settings in 'Network' manually. This not help. (he dont
used "Create a new connection" wizard). He tried ping - ping is OK. Next
visit engineer replace two cable splitters, that split incoming singnal
between twoTVs and PC with better ones. This not help also. Third visit
engineer again replace splitter and suggested me replace my win 98 with
winXP, then "all should work".
I found that I can send and receive mail via my Outlook and Outlook Express
previous mail configuration.
(account was configured for LAN connection, via free pop3 server). But no
any web pages loads.
Where is problem and how to configure network settings? ISP have no ideas.

thanks

go to internet explorer, click tools, internet options, connections
then unselect connect directly over lan and choose your cable
connection in the box above, click apply, close ie, click
start, run, type command ,enter then in thedos window type ipconfig
/release_all then try open ie.

I checked this: there are no "cable connection" in Internet Explorer >
Options > 'Connections' menu: there is 'Dial-up settings' -all boxes
inactive, and 'LAN settings' button, which have(in LAN settings tab)
"Automatically detect settings" checked, and 'Use a proxy server' box is
unchecked. I have no LAN in my home. But there are *no* other selections in
Internet Explorer 'Connections' tab. Also, I find no any directions or
notes to this broadband cable modem in my PC(at least, i find no it).

I tried - not help. Just show message in status bar, with correct IP:
'Connecting to site: IP .. ..", or 'Opening page http://www.domain.com/ (if
i type url in browser window) But no page loads.

go to IE options>connections at the bottom there is a "LAN setup?" (don't
have a win98 in front of me at the moment)

step thru the LAN setup again and tell it how you connect (select "local
gateway")

There are no "LAN setup" option on windows-98 in IE. There are 'LAN
settings' button, with 2 options only: "Automatically detect settings" or
not, and 'Use a proxy server' or not. If you meant use Internet Connection
Wizard to "Create a new connection"(button at the top of 'connections' tab,
called 'setup', then I tried it - this not help.

my bad :> yes , I was thinking of the "setup" that runs you thru the wizard
again ...

no go ? and all boxes in setup are unchecked ?

does the version of IE you are using have a "repair" option (in add/remove
progs) ?

is it setup to "obtain DNS server automatically" under TCP/IP configuration
in control panel>network ? (same for IP?)
