IRQ 15 conflict NIC and IDE controller

After installing a linksys Network Interface Card
(LNE100TX v 5.1), device manager in Win98 indicates a
hardware conflict between Intel 82371 PCI Bus Master IDE
controller & the new NIC card. The Intel controller uses
IRQ 15 for PCI Bus steering and the NIC card uses the same
IRQ 15.

I changed PCI slots with the card, no luck. Then I
disabled PCI Bus steering but the NIC card required PCI
Bus steering to be enabled in order to run.

Any ideas on how to manually change the IRQ for either?
I'm being pointed to do that in the BIOS but am unfamiliar
with how to do that, or what new trouble that may bring.
Is it best to return the card?

Thanks
Ben

Right click on My Compter, and select properties.
Drill down, through the device properties and find resources - there is a
change properties there that permits you to select an IRQ and more besides.

you may not have an "extra" irq ...if you have a ps2 mouse you disable com1
(and probably com2) to free up resources.

windows should sort itself out ...

Device mgr won't allow changes to either the NIC IRQ or
the PCI busmaster IDE controller's use of IRQ 15. The NIC
is intent on using it and the IDE controller isn't giving
it up.

There is an IRQ open (#5) but no way to select it.

IRQ #5 happens to be completely available I do not know
how to select it as the choice for the NIC. The BIOS does
not give me a way to assign IRQ's to PCI slots.

Any ideas how to do that?

Thx.

IRQ15 will always be used for the 2nd IDE controller (if enabled) as at boot
time it's used in ISA mode. So one solution is to only enable the 1st
(primary) hard disk controller.

You may also try to set in BIOS "Boot to P'n'P Operating System" to YES or
"Assign IRQs to devices" to NO. Either of these settings will make BIOS to
only allocate interrupts for boot vital devices and let the operating system
to allocate the others. Then you can change the IRQ from the Device Manager
in Windows.

here is something you can try , it should make windows rethink it IRQ
mapping...

controlpanel>system>>system devices>PCI bus>(properties) >IRQ steering>check
"get IRQ table from protected mode PCIBIOS 2.1 call"

and reboot

I pulled the modem PCI card and put the NIC in there. That
did it. NIC took the IRQ (#9) that the modem used. I will
deal with any modem conflicts because the modem is unused.

There were two IRQ's unused (#3 and #5) but the NIC would
not take them (BIOS issue?). SO this was the fix. Thanks
for the help.
