Hi Group:

Hopefully somebody from this group may have a solution for my IPX protocol
problem.

The problem is that 2 PCs with WinXP and Win98SE are not able to communicate
by IPX.
(Need this protocol for some old, but nice LAN-Games)

TCP/IP, IPX, NetBIOS and NetBEUI are installed on both PCs and
Windows-Network and TCP/IP protocol are running well.
Both PC's have installed DirectX 9.0 for DirectPlay.

However:
---> WinXP does not see the Win98-PC via IPX and
---> Win98 realizes a WinXP-PC,but cannot connect.

PS: My WinXP firewall is deactivated and Zonealarm is shut down.

Any comment or hint is very welcome.

Thomas,
Germany

First, simplify the network setup by removing NetBEUI from both PCs.
Then, choose either TCP/IP or IPX for File and Printer Sharing and
un-bind sharing from the other one. I've written a web page with
details:

Windows XP Network Protocols
http://www.practicallynetworked.com/..._protocols.htm

The IPX problems can probably be solved by making compatible settings
on both computers:

1. Enable NetBIOS over IPX.
2. Specify an explicit frame type, such as Ethernet 802.3.
3. Set the Network Addresses to the same value.

Steve:

Thanks for your comments, but the result is still the same:
---> WinXP does not see the Win98-PC via IPX and
---> Win98 realizes a WinXP-PC, but cannot connect.

What I have done is:
- specified IPX frame type 802.3
- set IPX network adresses to 0 on both PCs
- removed NetBEUI
- removed IPX bindings for file sharing and network client and left TCP/IP
only
- enabled NetBIOS over IPX

What was not clear:
Win98 requires bindings for NetBIOS, so I left file sharing and network
client for NetBIOS.
I could not find any option to modify bindings for NetBIOS under WinXP.

Is there anything else what I could try?

Steve,
Very fine job on the Practicallynetworked site.

In XP, you can un-bind NetBIOS from IPX/SPX by un-checking "NWLink
NetBIOS" in the list of network components in the connection
properties.

However, since you need IPX/SPX for games, it might be best to use
IPX/SPX for file and printer sharing on your network and un-bind file
sharing from TCP/IP.

Thanks, Rick. Setting up network protocols can be confusing, and
there's a lot of misinformation about it on the web and in news
groups. I did my best to give a complete and accurate description of
the subject.

Steve,
I appreciate your assistance. I have already tried to unbind TCP/IP,
however, need TCP/IP for Internet sharing.
What was astonishing yesterday:
MSHEARTS on the XP machine does not see a network and starts a single
session.
This might be a hint. Something with the XP computer must be wrong.
Do you know what network configuration is required for MSHEARTS?

Thomas, don't remove TCP/IP -- just un-bind file sharing from TCP/IP.
That will cause file sharing to only use PX/SPX while TCP/IP is still
available for Internet access.

I've included a section on un-binding file sharing from TCP/IP in this
web page:

Windows XP Network Protocols
http://www.practicallynetworked.com/..._protocols.htm

In Windows XP, Microsoft removed the capability for MSHEARTS to
connect to other players over a network.

Group, I have rebound both TCP/IP and IPX to filesharing and network client.
The secret was to set IPX as the standard protocol on the Win98 machine.
(IPX properties -> advanced).
Now it works.
