Hi,

I've just recompiled the kernel on my Slackware machine, and iptables
doesn't work any more:

# iptables -L
modprobe: Can't locate module ip_tables
iptables v1.2.7a: can't initialize iptables table `filter': iptables who?
(do you need to insmod?)
Perhaps iptables or your kernel needs to be upgraded.

(I compiled netfilter into the kernel non-modularly)

I recompiled iptables, but the same problem. I've tried patch-o-matic
(although none of the patches it offers seem directly related to my
problem) and removed ipchains - same thing.

Judging by google it seems lots of people are having this problem,
unfortunately not many people seem to have an answer. Strangely the
netfilter website has nothing on this problem either. What's really
annoying is that I had this happen last year on a machine, and I did fix
it.

Cheers,

pete

Congratulations, you hosed your kernel. Join the club. We've all done it
at one time or another or another dozen.

All of it? Why? What sort of benefit do you expect to see from that?

The problem is a misconfigured kernel. The answer is to start with a
Slackware kernel config file as .config (9.1 has them for kernel 2.4.22)
and be VERY sure that you know what you're doing when you change
anything from those default values.
