No need to panic, because linux is fine. If it breaks, it breaks for a
reason.
I think you have jumped to conclusion too early. Never heard of this
type of problem with iptables before. If you remember the time of the
freeze-up, can you take a look at the /var/log/message to see if there
is any ominous messages there. For example, the ppp link was down at
that exact moment of your reboot?
