IPAQ in Europe...connecting in

Hi. I had inquired here and elsewhere about WiFi connections in Europe...I
was told that they do not have much wifi over there. Well, we had good luck
all around....Venice, Verona, Milan and Paris....without much
trouble...finding an open wifi connection. I would walk around and find2-7
connections at a time and test them.. usually one in 5 or one in 10 would be
an open connection. Then sitting in the Galleria in Milan or a Trattoria in
Venice, sipping a drink, I was on the net and pulling down my normal email
in outlook 2002. Traded my 7 lb laptop for a 6 oz palmtop. Life is good.

ONE QUESTION...does anyone know of a way to hook a MODEM in with the iPAQ
(4355)??? Some hotels in the States do not have wireless. Hell, most
hotels don't have it yet...if I could be online in another way with some
small device that would get me on the net (e.g. bluetooth) with the iPAQ,
then i could leave the laptop at home for half my trips. thanks. m

There are USB modems. I've never had much luck with reliability using them
but they do work.

But how would a USB modem work with the IPAQ which doesnt have a USB port???
would need more of a bluetooth or wifi signal modem. is there such a thing?

Ive seen a few Bluetooth 56k modems. Fairly expensive for 56k modem at
around $100 USD. Not sure if the H4355 even has BT but if it does thats the
way to go.

Does the 4355 come with a CF slot? If so, look at a CF form factor dial modem. I occasionally use a
Targus V.90 56K modem with my iPAQ 5555 and my older iPAQ 3835...

Next question... does it have a serial port (havn't heard yet)

If so, with a serial cable, you can use any standard modem.

There are also IR modems that would work.

FWIW, the Orinoco RG1000 access point(and a number of other older access
points such as the "Airports) have a built in modems that could
(potentially) deal with this need.

What's missing is for someone with the skills to port the configuration
utility (open source) to allow the ppc to do two things... toggle the
modem on and off, and allow the phone number to be edited... the ability
to simply load config files could achieve the same.

If that were available, carrying these AP's would allow wifi access to
ethernet ports when available, and wifi to dialup when the only option
is a phone line.

It has IR capabilities, no serial port that I know of....it has a connector
at the bottom... maybe someone makes something that can tie into it....

the problem is that if i want something really small to use on the road for
half my trips, i need an alternative to WiFi when and if I can't get thru.
I have a cheap dialin service i use with my laptop. Another thing would be
a device that would sit at the end of the hotel rooms' hi speed internet
ethernet cable, transfer it to bluetooth so i could pick it up....ie an
ethernet/bluetooth adapter. But a modem would be more practical... there is
a small bluetooth modem, goes for about $130, made by Socket, I think. but
that is an expensive solution. thanks for your help! m

Then the only thing is get something else to use for dial up. Not the best
solution but then you're trying to do something the device wasn't designed
to do.

HP lists a serial sync cable for the 4300 series

This means that any serial cable for the 3800 series or above should
work with your device and a modem. You could also use the above cable
along with a nulmodem adapter.

There have been a number of small travel modems over the years and any
should work.

Note that the 17xx series used the same connector but did not have a
serial port but is listed on the above page.
