Hello,

Apologies for the crazy question, but is there any way I can confirm what
the default gateway and subnet mask would be for a static ip address of
87.127.173.225 I have tried various subnet calculators but got different
answers for subnet mask, but nothing for default gateway.

Kind regards,
Jeff

A subnet mask identifies what part of the IP address identifies the subnet,
and which part addresses a specific computer - thus 255.0.0.0 would be a
valid subnet mask, and 255.255.255.0 would also be valid. The first is a
class A subnet, and is very expensive to buy; the second is a class C subnet,
and is cheap in comparrison but only allows for 255 hosts. The only way for
you to find out your subnet mask, would be to ask another computer on the
network. As for a gateway - they can be on any IP but generally lurk at the
end of an IP address range 87.127.173.1 or .254 would be good guesses.

Hope this helps

Hi Jeff,

A whois query shows that 87.127.173.224 - 87.127.173.231 is the range
allocated to "Entanet Customer" and appears to be used by DSL customers.
This range corresponds to a subnet mask of 255.255.255.248, but it doesn't
guarantee that this is your subnet mask. You should ask the DSL provider to
be sure.

You can sometimes run a traceroute to find the gateway IP address, but this
is blocked by a firewall before you get to the end point. A good guess would
be 87.127.173.230, which is the last usable address in the range. You really
need to ask the DSL provider though to be sure.
