Ip config and network

Hi,
I'm running small business server 2003 [not SP2] with about 16 xp pro
workstations in a workgroup environment.
I also connect 2 laptops wirelesly to the workgroup to synchronise data.
I am having trouble with the IP address on one of the laptops and cannot
find out how to change things around.
The server has the IP address of the laptop [..name: Laptop3] as
192.168.1.42 but the IP address shown on the laptop is 192.168.1.44.
Everything seems to work ok..!! but I am allowing a software company to
access our server remotely to install something on the laptop. They tell me
thay cannot *see* the laptop at all on the network although I can see it
from anywhere 'in' the network including the server.
Ideally, I'd like to change the IP addressses to 192.168.1.42 for the
laptop but doing this [from the dial up networking in XP pro then
ipconfig/release, ipconfig/renew] prevents internet connection immediately.
How do I get the server to show, and the laptop to have, the same IP
address and retain internet connectivity.......?
I suspect this is a server issue but which one..?

I'm making a few presumtions here but It sounds like the laptop has been
assigned a static IP address, open a command prompt (Start - run, type cmd &
press enter), at the command prompt enter the command "ipconfig /all" (not
including the speach marks) and press enter look down the list for "ethernet
adaptor wireless network connection" and check what the status of the "DHCP
Enabled" is Yes or No.

If the IP address is set to no then a static IP has been manually set on the
client, change this to DHCP via the control panel - network connections -
right click the wireless adaptor and select properties - double click
TCP/IP, ensure that the radio buttons for the TCP/IP properties are set to
automatic (including the "Alternate Configuration" tab); you can now use
DHCP to assign an IP address to the client and if you need to ensure that
this particular client recieves the IP address 192.168.1.42, then you can
setup a reservation within the DHCP console, you will need to know what the
MAC address is of the wireless adaptor within the laptop, this can be
obtained from the ipconfig command displayed earlier.
