Hi,

Does somebody know if any rfc describes or knows if there are any other
guidelines how to properly allocate gateway IPs in a subnet?
I know it is common to use the lowest or the higest IP in a subnet, but I
have not found any document which mentions this.

regards,
Danny

As long as the IPs are within the subnet range, as far as I know it
doesn't matter how they are allocated.

I think, most of the network/systems administrators conventionally
follow using the highest available or second last IP address on a subnet
for a gateway.

One, however, may use any valid/un-reserved IP address for any purpose
and, or machine from the range of addresses allocated to a subnet.

Just about every gateway I've ever seen has used x.x.x.1.
