IP adress fields do not accept data in TCP/IP Properties

Windows Me. Have re-installed Me, removed commucations
and re-installed, removed nettrans key from registry
prior to installing communications and TCP/IP Protocol.

PC is on a LAN. If I choose "Obtain IP address
automatically", all works fine. When I opt to specify an
IP address both ip address and subnet mask fields are
highlighted but do not accept data. Clicking OK, I get
the message that I have not entered an address. Real
cool!. Same with adding a gateway, no data can be
entered; however, when I click ADD 0.0.0.0 goes into the
installed gateway field.

Before I dump Me for XP, does anyone have an idea on this
one? Thanks Harry

Strangely enough, that problem can be caused by video or font
problems. If you've changed the windows display fonts, change them
back to the defaults. Download and install the latest Me-compatible
drivers for your video card.

Thanks Steve for your reply. I did see your suggestion in
Carey Holzman's page and tried to change the system
fonts. The font change took but did not alter the
problem. The Dell PC has a Nvidia 256 controller but Dell
does not seem to have a driver for it. The changes to
this machine have been limited the Microsoft Critical
updates. It seems awfully stranged that ONLY the IP
fields in the TCP/IP properties can not be edited. There
has to be some gremline in the registry. Like I said
before, it all works well if I let the IP adress to be
obtained automatically. Regards Harry

Steve,
We have success. Here's the scoop!
Downloaded "45.23_win9x_english.exe" video device driver
from nvidia webpage (www.nvidia.com/object/win9x_45.23).
According to info this driver is forward and backward
compatible with nvidia gforce products. I was able to
specify desired IP addresses again following simple
install. Thanks for the tremendous hint --- it was not
intuitively obvious that a video driver would give me
grief in the network arena.
Thank you. Regards Harry
