I have two Lans, one in the UK and one in the US, which I
am now attempting to set up a vpn for.

My problem is that both lans use the same range of ip
addresses. ie 10.1.1.n.
I have tried changing some machines in the lan to
10.1.2.n but these machines neither see or are seen by
the rest of the lan.
Can anybody suggest why this is so and what I need to do
to overcome the problem?

regards

Ron Grout

What's the netmask in use on your network?

Yes, it is wrong. To be seen by each other, the two machines
must have IP addresses that agree in all the positions for
which the mask is binary "1." So if you want 10.10.1.m
and 10.10.2.n to be in the same subnet, you must have a mask
of 255.255.252.0 .

Yep, sure is.

Without getting TOO technical, the entries in the netmask determine what
range of addresses your computer considers to be "in" its network. A 255
means that that portion of the IP address must match exactly, a 0 means that
any address in that section will match. There are, of course, exceptions
but they don't apply here.

You'll need to change the third octet in the netmask (the third "255") to
252 for your PC to see 10.101.1.x and 10.101.2.x addresses.
