Internet wont work properly due to network config?? HELP

Ok ill try and explain this as easy as possible and not
sound like a total moron. I use windows 98 and i get
internet via a linksys router which is hooked up to my
verizon dsl modem. I was trying to link my computer to a
computer in the other room which uses windows xp. Before i
tryed to netwrok, everything was working fine, including
the internet but after i went into the network
configuration i believe i messed something up. My problem
is sometimes i am able to get on internet explorer and it
will work for say 2 minutes or so then it will say the
internet stopped responding and wont load anymore. I also
tryed to install aol and it just keep trying to do dial up
rather then lan. Now when i went into network config, i
did mess with a few things like where it shows the
ethernet adapter, i messed with some of the bindings and
unchecked some boxes thinking i could get the network to
work properly but i failed and now i cant get online
except once every often and its becoming a bother. I would
just reformat but the place where i buy my pc's are custom
built and dont come with the reboot disk, they want you to
bring it in and pay them to fix it If anyone can help
