Hi all,

I manage a smallish network and have noticed a trend where lots of
users are streaming video from a particular website, can anyone
recommend a good tool for finding out how much data is coming this
website?

Thanks,

Chris.

It is not a tool,...it is a firewall. I mean a real firewall,...not a host
based firewall running on the user's machine.
Even the home-user "routers" are light-weight firewalls (although they are
not really routers,..that's just marketing). These devices have some
limited amount of functionality in this area. All of the larger commercial
grade firewalls have features like this. But what the features actually
are, and what you can actually do with them varies greatly between brands
and models.

Hi Chris, this may be a bit over the top for what you want, but if you
are using a cisco router; here's an article that describes how to use
MRTG to make nice graphs of your traffic; -per protocol-.

http://www.servercare.nl/Lists/Posts/Post.aspx?ID=5

This way you will be able to view what traffic is causing bottlenecks.
You'll also find some explanation on NBAR, which is a cisco feature that
is being used for the above, and will be able to tell you a lot on what
goes on on your router.

As I said; it may be a bit much. I do feel however; no matter how big or
small your site is; each admin should know what's going on on their
network.

Something a lot easier and faster you might want to use is Wireshark.
Simple make one of the ports on your switch a 'roving port' so that you
can monitor all the traffic that goes over your router. Then configure
wireshark to filter only the traffic you want to see. (the website you
mention)
