Hi y'all..,
not sure my question is for this group....:

- have internet connection via satelite since october 2009
- realize that latency is the problem with these sort of connections
- pinging mostly around 700 to 900 msecs
- for emailing, websurfing, newsgroup reading it is OK
- often I needs to click twice on a link/url to get response

Problem is:
- downloading a file, an update ,etc. always ends in a break and never
completes
- listening/saving audio streams (from shoutcast.com e.g) vlc is the
tool, no cutoffs
- using streamripper with or without simultaneous listening to it always
cuts off

Anybody knows why vlc works and streamripper not...?
Or is there any download/manager program that can handle latency problems
with internet by satelite...?

I live in France too far away from the city to have ADSL over the phone
line and my sat/internet connection is 1 Mbits/sec, inhouse modem
connected to router, then to a repeater (accesspoint) with ethernet
connections to my two computers.
All five Linux distro's I use have same results

I use a Starband.net satellite connection in the NW U.S. and have found that
performance is vastly increased with the occasional "tweaking" of the
antenna pointing to receive the strongest signal. Any coaxial signal
indicator works fine, but I prefer one with an audible output as well as
digital.

I can't understand why VLC would work correctly and streamripper not.

I often use "wget -c ${URL}" as I can cron the task for off-peak satellite
hours. The "-c" option allows for resuming the download in the event of a
signal loss or other break.

Almost exactly the same network topology here. If I watch flash videos or
any other streaming media then they almost always play faster than the
download occurs. I've never had a complete break failure in any OS or other
large update though, so please check your signal strength and re-point or
fine-tune the point to maximize the satellite signal strength.
