Sorry if this is a bit OT

I want to set up a single camera on the front of my house as a security
measure and also to tell when visitors arive, as I have 3 computers wired
through a network in the house. an Internet camera like this one
http://www.dlink.com/products/?pid=143 would be ideal but I need it to be
for external instalation and be under £150, does anybody have any sugestions
for cameras or an alternative way of doing this, ie. a cheap security camera
like this one
http://www.diy.com/bq/product/produc...atId=&CATID=19
0650
Through a tv card (how would I monitor it through the network?)

Thanks for any help

Drew

Why not just stick a USB webcam in a sealed box?

You want something like the Axis 205, I'm not sure whether a external
housing is available for this camera but for ease of use it's spot on.
If you were feeling adventurous you could always make an enclosure for
it. You can view the images from any browser on the network.

IT would be ideal but for its operating environment-: 5°- 40° C (41°-104°
F), which even with an enclosure to make it waterproof would preclude it for
use in winter or even some summer nights and I cant site it indoors looking
out a window unfortunatly :-(

The distance from the front of my house to the computer is too great and any
how i would like to view it from more than one computer.

If you could sort out the USB distance problem (old PC dedicated to the
cam maybe?), you could run DCam Server, it's a free webcam server app
which would allow you to monitor the cam on any networked PC with a web
browser.

If it was in an enclosure with a small heater, as there are in most
good external camera housings, this would keep it above the minimum
temp and I doubt that unless it was in direct sunlight all day I can't
see it topping 40, (in the UK at least)!
You could do a search for 'IP cameras' and see which ones would come
closer to the specs you require. Bear in mind although some of the
cameras are a bit pricier than you want they will be able to interface
to a existing network and negates the requirement for additional
hardware and software on all the PC's that are going to view the
camera, (which I suppose is all them).
The other option is as you say, use a cheap camera then feed the
signal into a capture\line card installed in the pc. This does present
more setup troubles in the extra hard\software and the issue of
sharing. This would need a little further investigation into which
system would do what you want to do, although for the sub £150 price
tag I think you'll be struggling.

You can extend USB up to 25m using active extension cables.

Cable run would be more than 60 meters :-(

So as Clint suggested, pick up an old PC to run DCAM Server and stick it
in the loft within 5m of the cam. Probably cheaper than using USB
extensions anyway.
