I am trying to solve a problem with Internet sharing. I am using a wireless
network, Linksys broadband router, wireless G 2.4.GHz. Although, I am only
using it as an access point at this time. I have 3 computers, 1with Winxp
home no service packs, 1 with Win98SE and a laptop with Win98 I set up my
network by running the network setup wizard on the Winxp machine. After
installing the adapters, all are Linksys, on the 2 other machines I manually
configured them to connect to the access point After the network was up and
running I was able to share files and print to the printer attached to the
Winxp machine. I then ran the network setup wizard again and this time had
a floppy to set up the other computer running Win98se. Once I ran that on
the Win98se computer I had to rename that computer on the network because
the wizard would not let pick the name I had used when I had manually set up
the computer. Again I could access all the computers on the network and
print to the printer connected to the Winxp computer. I ran the Internet
sharing wizard on the Win XP machine so that I could share my dialup.

The problem that I have is that I can not get the internet gateway to wok
with the laptop. It does work fine on the other desk top that is running
Win98SE. This tells me that the WinXP machine is setup properly. Both the
laptop and the 2nd desktop run the same version of IE, IE 5.1.

When I run the disk that contains the network setup, made on the winxp
machine with the network setup wizard, I am asked to restart the computer.
when I do this for the first time I get the error message that an error
occurred loading C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\upnp.dll the file may not have been
installed or is corrupted I also get the error message Error loading
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\hnetwiz.dll one of the library files needed to run this
application cannot be found. I did find both of these files in the
windows\system folder.

I did un-install UPnP, go to Control Panel | Add/Remove Programs | Windows
Setup | Communications. That will also: 1. Remove the icon in the system
tray. 2. Remove these items from Start | Run | Msconfig | Startup: ICSDCLT
and SSDPSRV. After rebooting, you can delete these files from
C:\Windows\System: Hnetwiz.dll, Icsdclt.dll, Ncxp16.dll, Ncxp32.dll,
Ncxpnt.dll, Ssdpapi.dll, Ssdpsrv.exe, Upnp.dll. After this I did use a new
floppy made with the network wizard run on the WinXP machine and also
removed everything again and ran the network wizard from the Winxp CD with
the same result.

It is not that I can not access the internet from the laptop it is that I
can not control it. When the laptop starts up it starts the dialup on the
WinXP machine. Or if the laptop is running and the browser starts up it
will start the dial up on the WinXP machine. Or some time the dial up seems
to start up when other programs are started on the laptop.

..When I go Start-programs- accessories- communications- internet gateway I
get the message that Windows did not find an internet gateway on your
network. Check to be sure that all cables are connected correctly and that
you have one of the following A computer that is running Win XP or
greater with internet connection sharing enabled or an internet gateway with
universal plug and play enabled.

Do I need to install Win98 SE on the Laptop?
