Internet down but network is available

Small network of 10 pc's.
Windows 98 peer to peer via router. Router also acts as internet gateway
to broadband connection.

One of the PC's has developed an interesting problem.

No internet connection is available but there is still network
availability. All internal I.P's are available and it is able to access
shared drives.

For some reason I cannot even ping external I.P. addresses.

Any ideas?

I have completed a full virus scan and spyware sweep. Nothing there.

Have you uninstalled any firewall which might be on there?

Jim.

I am having the same problem with quite a few Windows 98 PC's where the
internet is unavailable but can still accept incoming remote connections i.e.
VNC.

This is a wide area problem and nearly every company that we support that
has Win 98 PC's are having problems, be it either no internet, not being able
to log on or asking for passwords when printing to shared printers.????

This is very puzzleing and strange, does anypone know if this is due to a
recent windows update or because of a new virus that no one knows about??

Any help would be much appriciated.

Thanks

No firewall present.

Full anti-virus and spyware scans are clean.

Is the gateway set properly?

Are you sure it's not just a DNS problem (i.e. can you ping a numeric
address like 68.142.197.80 -- otherwise known as www.yahoo.com)?

was there previous "software" firewall?
was this or any of the pc's used in a ics setup?
was this pc ever used to "dial up" to the internet?
someone dicking with the router to block internet access from that pc's mac
address?
never heard of a 10 port router but i think there are 16port ones from
linksys.... what is between the router and computers? a 10, 100 or
10/100hub or a switch?
hmmmmm

Thanks. I tried to ping the yahoo i.p. and that came back ok.
So it appears its a DNS issue.

The setup is a 16 port switch running through a 4 port router to a T-1
line. All the other windows 98 boxes run succesfully (and have done for
a year) on this set up.

Any ideas. I have tried reinstalling the network card. No success.
I have tried releasing / renewing the I.P. on several occassions.
I have tried a static i.p. address. No luck.

Ideas PLEASEEEE.

No firewall at all.
No ICS.
No Dial up.
No one has access to the router but me.

16 port switch to 4 port router to t-1.

All works fine on other 98 boxes and had done for a year. This is wacky!

it's weird because I had a similair if not the exact same problem on the
weekend.
a piece of crap hawkingtech.com parallel print server was put in recently.
when I turned one of the computers on I could not get on the internet but
could see other pc's in the hood.
a close look at the winipcfg screen and the piece of crap hawkingtech.com
print server's ip was my dhcp !!
what brand of router do you have? how many ip's are available?

If it's a DNS issue, then you need to make sure your machine is pointing
at the correct DNS server(s) and has basic connectivity to them -- try
pinging them.
