Hi,
I would like to be able to collect bandwidth usage and the amount of data
being uploaded and downloaded over a link in our network. We have Cisco 2600
serries routers in use.
We would like to be able to produce a graph of bandwidth usage over time,
and total upload and download sizes in Mbs so we can charge network usage to
remote departments based on the traffic that they produce. This would be the
same as an ISP would provide to a customer.
We would also use this system to show how much traffic is on our internet
connection and the percentage going to our web sites vers internal user
traffic.

Kenneth

You can use MRTG (http://people.ee.ethz.ch/~oetiker/webtools/mrtg/)... it is
Perl script which can collect usage data via SNMP and draw graphics about
bandwidth utilization, it has no cost (except your time) and works fine on
Windows with ActivePerl.

If you want different graphs for each department remember that each of them
have to connect to a different interface on the monitored router...

Hope to been helpful.

Sounds like what you want is Internet Cafe Software. You can search Google
or other search engines using "Internet Cafe" and will probably find a whole
variety of that type of stuff.

The best way to do this would be by routing all internet traffic through a
central server or with user based bandwidth logging. I dont know any server
that will monitor usage over a long period of time more than a minute,
however some have built in billing options.

The server that I would recomend is wingate for this situation. You could
assign each department a username which you can then use so when a user
opens IE, it prompts them to login. It goes further than just restricting
users to standard proxy protocols and will support NAT connection sharing.
At the end of the month, you can export csv files into excel and get a
report on how much data has been sent and how much has been recieved for
each department.

You may also be able to get a program installed on each client computer to
monitor internet traffic and then you can collate it at the end of the
month.

We are not primaryly interested in controlling what internal users do. We
wish to gather information on what the network loads are so that we can make
the correct amounts of network upgrades based on which links are producting
the traffic and where it is going. This information would then be used to
divide the costs of the links between the sites.
