I am not a very knowledgeable computer user concerning
networking or ip addressing. I have a problem with my
ISP. When installing my nic card received error "fatal
error unable to set ip configuration". Unable to connect
to internet or get mail with outlook express. System is
win 98 se (no network just a nic to cable modem). When I
run winipcfg and try to renew error received no DHCP
server found or uanble to find server. My settings in net
work configuration appear to be correct. Any suggstions?

I think there's a pretty good chance you're using the wrong
sort of cable to connect the nic to the cable modem. There
are two kinds -- straight through and crossover. Straight
is much more common, but might not be the one that's appropriate
for your particular combination of hardware. There should be
some discussion in the manual you got with the modem of what sort
of cable it expects.

Putting a hub between the two could fix the problem (especially
a hub that auto-detects, thereby obviating the issue).

HTH.

BTW, most NICs and modems have status lights telling whether
they "see" a connection. I suspect in your case they are
off.

I had a similar problem with 98se new system. Using a
Linksys router. I tried numerous nics and reloaded 98
twice before I unplugged the router and the modem and
reset the router. I dont know which one was at fault but
that fixed it.
