Internet Connection Sharing with XP/98

I have set up a network and ICS between two machines, one running '98, the
other running XP. The network has set up perfectly, no problems. Both
machines can read to and from each others drive but there seems to be a
problem with ICS.

The XP machine is set as host with the DSL connection, the '98 machine is
set as client using the XP setup Wizard. The Internet Gateway icon on the
client shows a connection with data flowing, connection can be made and
disconnected and the 'properties' page can be opened but when trying to
connect with Internet Explorer (V6) from the client, I just get the error:
"The page cannot be displayed" with the internet connection settings advice
below it. Because the connection between the two machines shows as
functioning, I can only think that the settings in the "Connections" window
under Internet options is incorrect. It is set to never dial a connection
but I'm not sure what the settings in the LAN settings window should be in
the Automatically detect settings and Use automatic configuration script
boxes.

Can anyone advise how the clients IE connections should be configured please
and is there anything I may have missed?.

The host machine opens IE faultlessly, the DSL connection has the XP
firewall enabled and in addition, Zone Alarm is running on the host. It is
also installed on the client but switched off as for the time being, I've
made the assumtion that since it is connecting through the host's firewall,
it is not necessary.

TIA

All of the boxes in the LAN settings window should be empty, Pete.

The problem could be that ZoneAlarm is running on the host. Check the
ZoneAlarm web site to see if your version of ZoneAlarm is compatible
with ICS.

Thanks for that advice Steve. That was the issue, shutting Zone Alarm down
on the XP host then allowed the '98 client to access the internet no problem
whether or not it's own Zone Alarm was running.

Zone Alarm on the host is now suspended while I look to see whether the free
version is compatible with ICS or whether I need to purchase a firewall for
the ICS host. The XP built in firewall is running on the host for the time
being but I don't know how comprehensive that one is.

If I have to purchase a suitable firewall for the ICS host, it may seem as
well to purchase a router/DSL modem with built in firewall instead and do
the internet sharing job 'properly' although I was pleased to see overall
how easy it was to set up Windows ICS compared with the difficulties some
seem to experience with it.

The last I heard, the latest free versions of ZA are not compatible with
ICS. You have to pay for that capability.

A router with firewall would be my suggestion - then you don't need to rely
on ICS or on the host system being available.

XP's built-in firewall, when enabled on the host's Internet
connection, protects both computers from undesired incoming Internet
traffic from hackers.

However, XP's firewall can't stop undesired outgoing traffic from
spyware programs or hacker tools that have somehow been installed on
your computer. Neither can a typical router/DSL modem. That requires
a program like ZoneAlarm.
