Internet Connection Sharing - Win2K Server?

Toying with some ideas for using some inherited redundant kit...

I have a Win2K server which I may integrate into my home set up
instead of everything running peer-to-peer as at present with WinXP
and ICS.

I will eventually stump up for a broadband router but, in the
intervening time, how do I share the broadband connection (which will
be plugged into the server) amongst the client machines?

cheers

jay

2K Server still has ICS, so you could do that, otherwise, do it properly
with RRAS, you can then set up some custom filters, and basically have lots
more control over how it works and so on to give you a bit more protection
from nasties. I've done it that way so I can run DNS / DHCP, Active
Directory and Exchange on my server - ICS doesn't like trying to co-exist
with existing dhcp and dns.

Hi Jay - you go into the network connection's Sharing tab
and tell it to enable Internet connection sharing. I presume
XP is the same, so you're probably already familiar with it.
In response to a previous post I made , someone mentioned
ICS DHCP; when I set mine up initially I didn't realise ICS does have
it's own DHCP server functionality, so I set my network up with static
IP. but the help files recommend the other PCs just use
DHCP. The Routing and RAS stuff may give you more fine
control over things; I haven't really looked at it. The fact
that it's a server OS doesn't really have that much bearing,
other than that you might want to make sure unused services
aren't running as an efficiency/security issue. If you're
hoping to run things like FTP or whatever, it might be worth
checking the Acceptable Use Policy of your ISP to see if they
allow them. Hope that helps,
Ross
