If the router is 192.168.1.1
then the pcs must be in range 192.168.1.# assuming netmask is
255.255.255.0 and not 192,168.0.# (or was that just a typo ?)

he only told us one of the two IPs on the desktop it has a wired
connection to the router and a wireless to share with a laptop

what's its NIC IP address ?

ICS assigns 192.168.0.1 to the interface over which it is sharing,
which would be the PCI wireless card. If you changed that IP to
192.168.0.5 then you need to change the default gateway etc settings
on the laptop to be 192.168.0.5

you could also try bridging the wireless and wired connections rather
than using ICS, as I think that would also achieve your objectives.
The laptop would then be assigned a 192.168.1.x addresss by the
Voyager.

The third option is to use the desktop PC as a non NAT router. You also need
a route for the wireless network configured on the ADSL router. See

http://www.windowsnetworking.com/art.../w2kprout.html
http://www.windowsnetworking.com/art.../routeset.html

The fourth is the run OpenVPN with the VPN bridged to the wireless LAN, this
also protects you from weaknesses in WPA and WEP, See
http://www.openvpn.net/. However this dos not appear to be an option for
the OP as OpenVPN does not run on Windows ME.

ME appears to be the bugbear, I suspect it's the root of some of the hassles
I am having.
On 2K if you change an iP it accepts it and carries on, whereas with ME you
have to reboot,
I have read the replies and comments with interest , been tied up the last
couple of days with work so I may have a little more time to play, so Iif I
don't come back I have tied myself to the computer and thrown It out of the
window!
All in all the answer seems change to 2K or XP ! and buy a router

If you can manage it you won't regret buying a router with a built in
WAP, it will make life a lot easier :-) You can use the Internet from
either PC whether the other one is on or off as well.
