Internet Connection Sharing on AOL

Set up an ad-hoc network between a desktop and a laptop at the in-laws
over Christmas. The desktop is connecting to AOL 9.0 (Gold Account) via
a BT USB ADSL modem. The network was using a Belkin USB wireless
adaptor plugged into the desktop and a PCMCIA card in the laptop.

Network worked fine but there was no way we could get ICS to work.

Are there any additional settings needed in AOL to allow ICS? I know
the same setup works because I had it working on my own machines in the
past, only using Demon as my ISP.

Suggestions gratefully received.

I'd set the desktop to 192.168.0.1 and the laptop to 192.168.0.2 using
the alternate manual configuration option. The desktop had a static IP
on the internet connection, which was a similar setup to the one I had
used before. The network worked, but I just couldn't get the ICS to go!

You are most likley using PPPoE drivers and the AOL software to connect.
ICS won't work this way. What you have to do, is to create a PPPoE
connection with Windows and share that connection. Details are
below.....(assumes windows XP)

Start-->Run-->Rasphone

create a new connection. Make sure you create a broadband connection.
When prompted for a user name and password, use the following format -
(E-Mail Removed) along with their normal account password. Ensure that
login contains no upper-case letters or spaces, even if the AOL
screenname does. Also, make sure the password is between 6-8 characters,
and contains only lower-case letters and numbers.

Hope this helps

George

he may need additional AOL screen names (one per PC ?) if it is
necessary to have each machine use the AOL software, with the "main"
screen name used on the gateway machine with the modem.

The easiest way to connect 2 machines to the net is with a router. It
means spending money (£60-70?) but will save a lot of grief in the
short, medium and long term, IMHO. I think that the Netgear 834 range is
recommended by AOL. Look on Amazon for one that will do wireless.

I'm on AOL Silver and use a router to share t'internet between 3
machines, a mixtures of PCs and Macs.

I've just started using a router and it's a big improvement over the ad
hoc set up. The old stuff I was using I gave to the F-I-L so I don't
think he'd want to invest too much. The "create new connection" route
seems to be the best bet, but he told me he only had a couple of weeks
left with AOL anyway, so he may change ISPs and then the problem goes
away...hopefully.

There didn't seem to be a lot of help on AOL for ICS?

You don't need have AOL installed on ANY of the PCs to connect to the
internet if you set up a PPPoE or PPPoA DUN connection. You also don't
have to worry about extra screen-names etc. Once the connection has been
set up, you can treat it like any other ISP's connection.

For the record, AOL's 'official' line on ICS is that it is unsupported
to connect anything apart from a games console. Have a look at AOL's
help for setting up Xbox live etc.
