Hi folks!

I have a question. Maybe you might offer me some solutions.

I just bought a DELL INSPIRON 8500 laptop with Windows XP. The laptop also
has a wireless network card. At home, I also have a desktop computer and a
fast cable internet connection.

So, I decided to get a router to have internet connection with desktop and
laptop. The desktop has a normal ethernet card. I connected the main cable
for the internet connection to the router, and made another connection from
router to the desktop. I am able to get on the internet with the desktop,
but I can't get on the internet with the laptop (the one with the wireless
ethernet card). The WLAN light on the router (which indicates wireless
segment) should turn on solid green when you turn on the router and start
blinking through data transition, but WLAN on the router doesn't light up at
all.

The router I am using is DLINK DI-624. When I bought this router a couple of
days ago, I told them that I had a new DELL INSPIRON 8500 laptop. And they
gave me this router and said it would work.

Do you have any idea what the problem might be with the wireless connection?
Do I have to go through some setup menu on the laptop or do I need to put in
some IP number?

Thanks for your help.

Look when I first got my Linksys wireless router and network card over
two years ago, I was a wet behind the ears newbie too. I got on the phone
with Linksys Tech Support and they helped me get going. I suggest that
you may want to do the same.

Also look at the wireless security link.

The protection of the machine starts with the O/S and everything else is
secondary to it.

First of all, I like to thank you for taking the time to respond to my
posting.

>Did you set the laptop to infrastructure?

No, I did not. I don't know how to set it up.

>Did you create an SSID?

No, I did not. I don't know how to set it up.

>Are the router and laptop on the same channel and zone?

How would I know if they're on the same channel? When I bought the router,
they said that it didn't require any setting, and that it would be so easy
to get it to work. I don't see any switch on the router. There is nothing on
the router to setup.

Do I need to make a connection between the router and the computer in order
to program the router first?

>Is MAC address filtering enabled in the router?

I wish I knew.

>Did you enter the laptop's MAC address in the router?

How do I do that?

>Is WEP enabled?

I don't know what WEP is. I don't know how to enable it.

>Does the WEP key in the router match the WEP key on the laptop?

I've been staring at the router since yesterday, turning upside down, from
one side to another, I haven't seen any key. How do I set the WEP key on the
laptop?

>Did you RTFM??

I don't know what RTFM means.

I am sorry that I don't know anything. That's why I need help to get this
working. Is there any website to guide me through these steps?

Go to this link to get the manual for your router.

http://support.dlink.com/Products/vi...oductid=DI-624

You will also find a host of help setting up your router.

As for the laptop, RTFM.

(RTFM = Read The F**king Manual)

The "key" here is a security "passphrase". There's no physical key.

If you Google under "wireless security" you ought to come up with
enough web sites to make your head spin. Read any five of them and
you'll know more about wireless than you'd ever thought you could want
.

My husband and I have a D-Link router, also.

You configure your router using a web page that loads into your
browser. The D-link documentation should tell you the exact address,
but, for a helpful clue, it should be "http://localhost:<port
numbers>", or "http://127.0.0.0:<port numbers>". It allows you to set
the information you need to set from the router end of things. The
books that came with your Dell have information on how to configure
the wireless card under XP.

Even though such comments as RTFM, I thank everybody for taking the time to
respond to my posting. I truly appreciate the efforts of those who are truly
trying to help, rather than trying to embarrass you simply because you don't
know as much.

After spending so much time to get the wireless card in my brand-new laptop
to work, I finally found the problem. The wireless network card was
defective.

All along I suspected that the card might be defective, but considering the
fact that I just received the laptop a few days ago, I dismissed such
possibility and insisted working on the problem a bit longer.

Anyway, thanks again.
