Internet connection drops when file sharing

I have 3 notebooks on a wireless home network. Shared folders appear on all
3 machines; however, when trying to access or transfer a file from one to
another, we lose our internet connection. Internet access can be reinstated
by turning modem off and then back on. Any thoughts on why this is happening
or how we might fix it?
