Internet connection on boot

I have a Win98SE and a WinXP networked by a crossover cable, both connect to
our ISP thru the XP. System works well. Whenever I boot the 98, however,
if the system is NOT connected to the ISP, it automatically dials (the XP's)
ISP. How can I find out what is doing this, then stop it? Very annoying.

Have up-to-date AV. Been through the msconfig/startup files
uncheck-one-at-a-time routine, however, results are inconsistent. Think
I've found the culprit, then it reappears later. Sounds like spyware, but
repeated checks fail to find anything.
Sure could use some help.
Thanks in advance

Dave B

If nothing shows up from msconfig then try running Process Explorer to
see if you recognise everything.

Or it may be the settings in one of your legitimate programs. For
example, someone posted here recently with a similar problem which
turned out to be Kerio personal firewall trying to do reverse dns
lookups. Unchecking an options box resolved that one.

Wow James, that's quite a utility. May take me a while to learn how to use
it I need to figure out how to get to display on boot so I can catch the
"offender".

Great suggestion. Thx

Dave
