Internal wifi card for laptop

Does anyone have experience with internal wifi cards (mini PCI) for laptops?
A couple of month ago someone recommended one and posted a URL for a site
that sells them. I didn't keep the site because I wasn't interested at the
time. I am now interested in getting one and I would be interested in
comments as to how they work compared to the external cards.

I bought this one for my Toshiba Satellite A15-S127, so far it works
very well, no issues until I tried to install a new driver from the
Microsoft Update site, which caused it not to work on my XP Pro
system.

I did a system restore to a previous restore point and now it's fine
again. (I've NEVER had a third-party device driver downloaded from MS
work right, don't know why I keep trying.)

It also seems to work OK with Netstumbler and Ethereal.

I have used a Siemens and a D-Link PCMCIA card in the same laptop, the
range seems to be about the same with the internal card, though it
seems to be less sensitive to the orientation. My Siemens card had to
be turned a certain direction at the kitchen table to get a decent
signal, while the internal card doesn't seem to care which way it's
turned.

If you elect to install an internal card yourself, be very careful
when connecting the antenna leads, mine seemd to be very sensitive to
getting the connectors aligned exactly right before they'd snap into
place.

It would have been very easy to apply too much pressure when all I
really needed to do was get it lined up right.

I have a Dell Inspiron 8200 that came with a Truemobile internal mini-
PCI WiFi card. It sucked. the system was constantly hanging up as it
polled the AP for a signal. So I took a D-Link DWL-520+ apart and
removed the mini-PCI card and swapped it out with the Truemobile. It
works great now.

First, I uninstalled the Truemobile drivers from Control
Panel/System/Device Manager. Then I took out the card itself. Rebooted.
I then installed the D-Link drivers, shut the system down and installed
the D-Link card in the mini-PCI slot. Booted up and the system installed
the drivers and I was good to go. I'm running WinXP-Pro, BTW.

I can 2nd the DLink solutions. I also have a Inspiron 8200, mine came
without any WIFi card, read about the DLink 520+ PCI trick, bought one
cheap (£35) took the can apart, stuck the card in my laptop, and it work
great. The drivers are even XP signed and rock solid.

personally, i'd go for an orinoco gold card. its the one all the wifi
hackers go for so so it's got to be half decent. ;-)

it's the one i have btw.
