I had terrible outage problems. Very erratic and never up or down for
the same amount of time. Tried everything, updated every software and
firmware I could find. Tried two 802.11b/g routers. Nothing worked,
was about to give up and write it off to having Mac/XP problems.

Our hardware:

RCA Roadrunner Cable Modem
BOTH a D-Link DI-624 and Linksys WRT54G
Dell Notebook with Truemobile 1300 running XP
Powerbook with Airport Extreme card running 10.2.6

Know what the problem was? Bad wiring in our building and an
inadequate surge protector. The modem and router were on a power
strip for tv's etc. I moved them (for the fourth time) this time to
the same APC Surgearrest Pro that my computer is on, and I noticed
that whenever the air conditioner turns on, the "Wiring Fault" light
flashed. The household surge protector wasn't preventing the router
from feeling the ill effects of that little kick. Since plugging them
into the good surge protector, no problems.

Hope that helps some other people who are at the end of their rope.

Before writing off anything, let us ask. Do you, or someone near by have a
2.4GHz phone? A 2.4GHz PC and an old microwave?

Yep, this band can have multiple uses. Try experimenting on the extremes
of using channel 10 or 11 and channel 1. Channel 11 has worked well for me
and as long as callers stay more than 6-7 feet from the base station or the
portable, I don't have problems. But occasionally the people down stairs
who also have a 2.4GHz phone can do it. But I managed to have less trouble
at channel 11.
