I've recently installed a P4-3Ghz Compaq XP-pro machine connected to
the Internet via a linksys wireless-G adapter and a motorola
wireless router/cable modem.
I've been experiencing intermittent spontaneous loss of
connection, seemingly related to the use of internet explorer
(though that is conjecture). The machine will stay connected
all night, but soon after using the browser, the connection will be
lost. That is my first problem.
The second, and perhaps more frustrating problem, is that once the
network connection is lost, the system freezes. It appears
that at this point the "system" process is using 98% of the CPU.
At that point I have two choices: 1) reboot (though this is
takes a long time due to the system freeze, or 2) disable the
network adapter and then re-enable it (takes about the same amount
of time).
I recently updated my adapter driver from the linksys site, so
I have the most recent driver installed.
My questions are:
What might be causing the spontaneous disconnects? Could it be the
browser?
What is causing the runaway process after the disconnects?
I can't find reference to anything quite like this on the net,
though I imagine that others might be having similar problems, and
perhaps have a solution.
