Intermittent shared directory

I have a simple Windows Server 2003 server which is configured only as a file
server on a workgroup network. There are only 2 other computers on the
network both of which are running XP SP3. I have several shared directories
on the server which are set for everyone to have access. Generally
everything works. Then at random times one of the shared directories (always
the same one) cannot be accessed by one or the other of the workstations.
One of the workstations can always access the directory. If you wait awhile
or reboot everything all returns to normal. I checked and rechecked the
share settings and all the directories are shared identically but only one of
them locks up. If I can't get to share1 I can immediately get to shares 2-5.
Then back to share1 and nothing. Says the usual note about this directory
is inacessible. Suggestions greatly appreciated.

Is there anything in the event logs of either computer when you can't get
access to the share?

Good suggestion. I looked in the logs and there is nothing of an error or
warning nature that I can see.
