It would seem that our Windows 2003 Server (Standard version - installed less
than a six months ago) seems to be "suddenly", intermittently, "tagging"
files (mostly Word documents) as "read only" when a particular workstation
attempts to access them (suspicious, right there, right?).
It seems to be apparent on just this one workstation and occurs with or
without our firewall software installed (ZoneAlarm or Norton).
This user has equal access rights to all files within the shared location
just like everyone else and there's nothing to indicate why this may be
happening.
I've tried just about everything I can think of.... I've replaced the
network card (disabling the onboard and replacing with another), replaced the
network cabling, replaced the 24-port hub, replaced the mouse, re-installed
the OS (WinXP), even tried going back to Windows 2000 Pro on this PC (Heck,
I've even replaced the PC with another.... but "no joy") and still get this
"intermittent read only" - SOMETIMES.
By that, I mean that she can open a document and it's accessible, then she
closes it and re-opens it and it shows up as "read only".
OR - she tries opening a file several times in a row and "three times out of
five" (or whatever...) whichever file she is trying to use will appear in
Word as "read only". No "warning message" - it just comes up as "read
only"...
This happens for virtually ANY word document she opens from any location
within the shared folder that contains the files she uses.
I've checked the Server performance (P-4 3.0 GHz, 2 GB RAM, 200 GB RAID-1)
and there is very little happening that might cause a "write delay" or
whatever (no processes or usage over 20% of this server's capability), and as
I said, apparently no one else is affected.
My attempts to duplicate the problem show the same results - one time it's
OK, the next it's "read only". Frustrating....
It SEEMS that if I SLOWLY "double-click" on any given file (or right click
and select "open"), it opens OK - USUALLY (but no guarantee - it may still be
"R.O."). However, a "normal" double-click will show it to be "R.O." more
times than not.
She is "running" EXACTLY the same software as all other PC's in this office
and I can find no "outside influences" (IE: spyware, virus, etc.) that might
be affecting her.
Even tho everyone has the same access to the shared folder on the file
server, no one else is simultaneously accessing these files (this problem
would be understandable if someone else had the file "open" but it happens
even when no one else is "logged on" to the network).
This person is PRIMARILY responsible for word processing and little else and
her complaints about this are becoming more than a little tiring...
I'm pulling out what's left of my hair with this "issue"....
What have I overlooked? OR what the heck has happened to her workstation?
or her "cube"?! ...
Everyone in the office says her "cube" is "haunted"... (the former occupant
was a self-proclaimed "witch" from Romania....).
Hmmmmmmm....
I ain't goin' there....
