intermittent network errors...

Need your help, folks.
Network - Windows 98SE with Client for Microsoft Networks(NetBEUI)
Problem - File copying between systems abruptly stops saying "The
connection
is no longer available". An old DOS(!) application that accesses
a shared drive says "Error writing to Z:. Disk error or disk drive not
closed" every few minutes.
Tried changing cables, switch. Checked power management on all
systems. All of them have "Always On" setting.
One of them seems to generate more errors. An XP2000 system with an
ASUS motherboard. Checked to see if it goes into "Suspend" mode. It
doesn't but once in a while it disappears from the "Network
Neighborhood".
Any ideas on what the problem could be?

Thanks.

Watch the lights on the NIC and switch when it happens for anything
unusual.

Did it work previously, or is this a newly installed NIC?
If it's new, are you sure the NIC is good and the drivers current?

Sometimes RJ-45 connectors can be a bit flaky.

Intermittent errors can be difficult to track down.

If new installation, also make sure you don't have an IRQ
conflict. NIC's don't play real well when forced to share
an interrupt.
