We have a problem with connecting to our web and email servers that are on
the same subnet. Connections work fine one time, then fail just a few minutes
later. Or connections fail initially then work fine on 3rd or 4th attempt.

Servers are Win2k SP4 and clients are Win2k as well. We've done everything
imaginable - replaced NIC's, cables, switches, etc.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Turn off the Power Saver features on the Nics?

Thanks for the suggestion. I turned off the power saver but it didn't have
any effect on the problem. I use a little .bat file to ping the 2 servers.
The pings were successful the first few times but went back to periodic
failures after that.

If we knew where the problem was we could address it with the vendor (Cisco
for network related). But at this point it could be anything from Active
Directory to Master Browsing, to a hardware component (switch, router, etc.)

Well, Active Directory and Master Browsing can not effect that, so you can
rule those out. You could disable Browsing all together, and not even have
an AD Domain and it should still ping. For the most part Ping depends on
the just the TCP/IP Stack and the hardware.
