Intermittent LAN Connection

I have a home "network" consisting of an XP machine and a W98SE machine. I
have also an internet connection (via cable modem) on the XP. (The XP has
two ethernet adapters). The two machines are connected with a standard
cross-over (patch) cable. All of a sudden, the adapter on the XP that is
connected to the adapter on the 98SE is constantly going into and out of
ready. A popup message appears saying that "A network cable is unplugged".
Correspondingly, when looking at the Connections list, the adapter icon goes
from normal to "red x'd". Any ideas?

Hardware fault, most likely; bad NIC, bad cable.
