interfacing two linksys routers

In my home I have two linksys routers - a BEFSR81 which is connected to my
cable modem, and a WRT54G wireless router, which is daisychained off the
BEFSR81. The BEFSR81's IP is 192.168.1.1 and the WRT54G's IP address is
192.168.2.1.

My problem is this: all my computers are on one workgroup. The PCs on one
router cannot see the PCs on the other. Linksys tech support suggested I
change the IP of the WRT54G to 192.168.1,2; however that did not fix the
problem, AND it cut off my son's xbox (wired) and his (wireless) Sony PSP
game player. which both use the WRT54G.

What to do? I want all PCs to see each other, across both routers.

Thanks in advance,
Steve

I forgot to mention: all devices can see the internet, regardless of which
router they are on.

I'm no expert, but I have the same Ethernet router and when I wanted
wireless ability Linksys told me never to attach two routers together and
had me buy a wireless access point instead, which works fine on my eight pc
network

Get an 8-port Ethernet switch and replace the BEFSR81 and have the WRT54G connect to Cable
and chain the E-switch off the WRT54G.

Linksys tech support is truely clueless. I have a WRT54G as my main router,
another WRT54G that is connected wirelessly to it to expand my wireless
network, and a Netgear wireless/wired router that plugs into the main router
via cat5 to expand my wireless network in the other direction. The first
router is 10.0.0.1. The second WRT54G is 10.0.0.100. The Netgear is
10.0.0.200. All work great. Clients can connect to all three routers via
wireless and work fine. Don't waste your money on a WAP, and whatever you do
don't get the worthless WRE54g wireless range expander.

Ook, I will give that setup a shot and report back.

If the "DCHP server" in the first router is set to 10.0.0.1, then are the
users for that server set to start at 10.0.0.2? and, the users for the
second router set to start at 10.0.0.101, etc?

I take it that there is nothing significant to the "192.168.x.x" IP address
that seems to be prevalant here?

Thanks,
Steve

10.x.x.x is a reserved IP range for private networks, as is 192.168.x.x.
Either can be used for a private network like yours. Most home routers ship
with 192.168.0.x as an address, so most home networks use that range. It
doesn't matter.

I neglected to mention that I'm using the sveasoft alchemy firmware.
Otherwise I don't think you can link them wirelessly because you have to
enable WDS. However, with stock linksys firmware you can link them via cat5,
there is absolutely no reason to get a more expensive wired range expander
or access point. Simply shut off the DHCP server of the second router and
set it's IP to an IP on your network. It doesn't even have to be a Linksys
router. I don't even set it's gateway IP, and it works. Warning - YMMV -
some routers may not work this well, but my Netgear gets along real good
with the LInksys.

When a user connects to any of the other routers, their IP still comes from
the main router because that is the only one that has a running DHCP server.
All others have DHCP disabled. Therefore, IP's start at 10.0.0.2 and work
their way up. The highest I have is 10.0.0.12. The other routers act simply
as repeaters into the main router, and the main router shows them on it's
client list.

I hope you did *not* connect the WRT WAN port to a BEF LAN port ?
In daisychaining, I hope you connected a LAN port of the WRT54G to a LAN
port of the BEFSR81 ?
Otherwise the LANs will never see each other...
Connecting LAN ports uses one router as dumb switch (usually done to expand
a wired network with a wireless part).
Also disable one of both DHCP server, some routers conflict when more as one
DHCP server is on the LAN.
And indeed, set the addresses of both to 192.168.0.x (I suggest x = 1 and 2
respectively), otherwise you again have 2 subnets usually not seeing each
other.
(can use 10.0.0.x too, it's also a private range)

I have my routers in 192.168.0.1 and 192.168.0.2, one of them acting as DHCP
server for the range of 192.168.0.100 upto 200.
