Actually the interface will "think" that the whole link is in the same
mode (i.e. the remote end is in the same mode as the interface itself).
With some commands (I seem to have mii-diag picked up from somewhere)
you may see what all modes the link partner did advertise in its
negotiation sequence, but as the speed/mode should be the same on both
ends of the link, you cannot with certainity see what is the mode of
the link partner - you should log on to the link partner to find out that.
There are some ways to make educated guesses on the speed/mode of the
link partner interface:
- if you have a speed mismatch, the link will appear dead: no data will
get through
- if you have a duplex mismatch, the link will appear to work fine at
low usage, but will start to generate various errors and delays when
the load increases (high percentage of collisions on a full-duplex
link is an almost 100% way to recognise a duplex problem - i.e. that
the remote end is in half-duplex state)
