Interesting Problem?

I posted earlier about not being able to get a DWL-650 card to connect to a
WRT55AG when WEP was enabled. I had been using a passphrase on the router
and I copied the value for Key 1 to the settings for the card. That never
worked? I manually set the 4 keys at the router and used the key 1 value -
now everything works?

Any explanations?

Wayne

How did you copy the key to the card's settings (e.g. what program did you
use)? If you use copy/paste, try pasting into Notepad, copying from
Notepad, and pasting into the setup program.

I keyed it in from the keyboard - by "copy" I meant that I used the same
values.

I don't know how your router is actually using the keys, but if it generates
the full list of 4 keys, then it's probably using all 4 keys. That is, it
probably switches key every so-many packets. WEP sends out an index number
with each encrypted packet. The receiver has to have a keylist identical to
the sender's - same keys, same order - for the index to work. If you
initially only copied one key to the client, it might work for a while and
then die, or not work at all.

I don't see a way to put more that one key in for the DWL650? Also, when I
manually keyed in the values I entered values for all 4 keys at the router
but only for key 1 on the DWL650 system?

Maybe your router doesn't automatically switch keys. If it defaults to using
the first key in the list, and doesn't change automatically, you only need
the first key on the client. Maybe Yves is on the right track - your initial
cut-and-paste may have modified the key.
