Interesting Issue

Hello
I have a w2k3 intel dual nic server. One nic is set to
local address such as 192.168.0.210. The other card is
set to local address such as 192.168.0.211. I have
another server and its addresses are such as
192.168.0.212 and 213. The problem is that i get a ip
conflict error on the .210 card saying it belongs to
the .212 card. Very confused as what to do. I check our
dns server (ISA) but all is ok there. Any one know how to
fix this?

Don't use two NICs in the same subnet. Use one NIC and add both addrresses
to it.

HUH?
I need both nics for load balancing when im ready to
implement it. Maybe you missed what i was saying. I have
Two servers that have different ip addresses. But one
server says there is a conflict with a certain mac
address that is related to the other server.

Perhaps.
I don't have earlier posts. This group is too busy, I don't keep old
messages very long.

You probably have conflicting DNS or WINS entries for those. If DNS was ok,
then check WINS too.

All wins and dns are fine. dns and wins are to the same
ISA server. Everything was fine unitl i added this other
server with the so called conflicting ip address. The
fact is that there are two nics on our network that are
the same. Its baffeling!!

can you do a nbtstat -a <ip> and see what the results are? Can you
temporarily disable the NIC and nbtstat again and see if it resolves? Maybe
there is a rogue box with an IP out there. A sniffer or fluke should pick it
up pretty quick too.

Ran nbtstat and got the result i should have. Shows the
server and mac address that it is supposed to belong to.
Also ran it again with the nic disabled. It did not find
the ip address.

What about entries in the HOST or LMHOST file on this machine? If another
NIC with the "dupe" IP does not really exist on the system somewhere then
this machine has to be getting false information from someplace and if it
isn't DNS or the WINS service, then the HOST or LMHOST is the only place I
can think of where this could happen.

Oh,...and one other place to look. Even as far fetched as it may seem,...
check each NIC in the machine and look in the Advanced settings to make sure
the problem IP# has not also been added to one of the NIC as a "secondary"
address somewhere along the way and then forgotten about. This is commonly
done when running multiple Web or FTP sites on the same machine so that each
site can be bound to a separate IP# to keep "sites" distinct and not
interferring with each other.

I checked all of those ideas too and still nothing. I
have the ability to wipe the server out that has the so
called offending nic. I want to see if that makes any
difference. Thanks for all the.
