Intel Pro/1000 CT network adapter - VFAT problem

Have just upgraded motherboard to an Asus P4C800-E Deluxe
board with built in 1Ghz Networking.

After installing NIC drivers, system on reboot locks and
goes blue screen in Win98-SE advising necessary file for
VFAT can not locate a particular file.

If Network card is disabled in BIOS system will properly
load. If previously installed 3Com 3c905cTX-M is loaded
system will start normally and connect to network.

Have manually replaced all required 386 files, does not
resolve the issue. Have tried PCI Intel Pro/1000 MT with
built in NIC disabled, still will not load. Same problem.

Have replaced VFAT.vxd. Have tried step by step logging.
Get to msmouse.vxd and loads all drivers. Locks
immediately after msmouse.vxd without asking for further
drivers, so not sure what is loading next.

System boots from Tekram SCSI controller with 9.1 10RPM
drive. Also one WD IDE drive with a primary boot
partition and DVDRW on IDE bus, plus SCSI tape drive, SCSI
Panasonic DVD writer and SCSI NEC CD.

Have tried older drivers, current intel drivers for NIC.

Any assistance would be appreciated.

Hey Alt-ctrl-del.

Misery loves company, and you got some company.

I encountered the IDENTICAL issue today--the Intel Pro/1000 MT card works
fine in XP (this is a dual boot machine) but I get the VFAT error as well in
Win98SE. I too have tried all the solutions you did without any joy.

Best of luck to us both!

I'll let you know if I get it working.

Actually, my issue is similar, but not identical in that I have an ASUS P4PE
motherboard and I am replacing a 3com905TX-M with a Intel Pro/1000 MT PCI
slot card. BTW, the MS suggested solutions here:

http://support.microsoft.com/default...NoWebContent=1

make no difference.

I had seen the microserf message. Only thing that had not
tried was ifshlp.sys in the config.sys. Will give it a
try. Have not been able to locate anything other
information about the problem on:
Microseft
Asus
Intel
or a general net search.

Still looking for a solution. Many thanks for your
assistance and will let you know if am able to resolve
issue.

Hi Alt-Ctrl-Del!

I'll try calling Intel tech support on Tuesday and let you know if I get any
help that works.

Once more many thanks for your assistance.

Had tried the other suggestions from your Microseft
referal page. Tried the only one had not done, which was
to add ifshlp.sys to the config.sys. Unfortunately, this
did not work either.

So, still stuck and frustrated.

Further suggestions appreciated.

I telephoned the Oracle of Intel today; I am awaiting its decision on
whether our humble Windows98SE inquiry is worthy of the promised call back.

BTW, the Intel Pro/1000 MT makes a nice Gigabit network in WindowsXP. We
have two XP machines with the Pro/1000MT and several others with assorted
NICS all hung on a Linksys 8 port gigabit EG008W, Linksys 4 port 10/100
router and a Toshiba cable modem for internet. Very sweet, with the gigabit
nics pushing more info across the lan than the hard drives can handle.

Many thanks for your continued inquiries.

Have contacted the Canadain distributor for Asus. They have contacted
Asus in Tiawan, who were not particularily helpful. The Cdn
distributor is going to set up a test 98SE machine and see if they can
recreate the problem. Asus reported that there is no problem from
their previous tests.

This particular network that I am working on is my test network. I
maintain mostly Novell servers and networks.

In this case there is a NT4.0 server with a Dlink 804HV router,
(ingress filtering) and a 8 Port SMC 10/100/1000 router. The only
machine that is running 98SE is my personal machine as I still find I
need to make DOS boot disks, etc for repairs to clients computers.
All other machines are running 2000 and there are a number of them.
Sorry, not a fan at all of XP.

I have had no problem with either the NT4.0 server or the 2000
machines installing the Intel MT adaptor. Performance is more than
reasonable.

I have yet to try installing the card to a Novell server and as soon
as this issue is resolved, that is the next step.

Many thanks

Hey CAD!

The Oracle from Intel replied to me today, leaving a message on my voice
mail. It suggested that one should remove all networking components from
Win98, then attempt a reinstall of the networking components and drivers for
the Intel card. This should clear the "vfat" error.

I am going to assume that it meant removing the *software* components of
Win98 Networking, as well as the *drivers* for both the Intel and any legacy
3Com or other NIC cards. I don't see any harm in at least trying this
suggestion. I am less inclined to physically remove the card since it is
working in XP on this machine. I will however rip out the Networking
components from the Win98SE installation and do so either later tonight or
tomorrow. In the meantime, if you try this suggestion before then and have
some joy, post back. Actually, even if it doesn't work, post back.

Best regards,

Well, gave it a try. Removed all networking including dial up.
Unfortunately, exactly the same result. VFAT error once more.

I took it to the point of overwriting all existing update files on the
machine as well.

If your's does not work, think will install another scsi drive and do
a new install. Would like to see if that will resolve the issue. Not
even sure why would do that, makes more sense to just upgrade the
whole thing to Win2K.

Please let me know if you fair any better.
