Intel EtherExpress Pro/100 connection freezing

I have installed Mandrake 10 Official on a IBM Netvista PC with an
integrated Intel EtherExpress Pro/100 NIC.
The NIC installed without problems, and runs OK initially for web browsing
etc. However, when downloading large files, such as software updates, the
downloads fail as the NIC freezes and eth0 goes down. After a while, eth0
comes back up and the connection is restored.
It seems others have had this problem with the integrated Pro/100 NIC but I
have not yet found a solution. I can't believe that this card will _never_
work so have any of you gurus any suggestions?
ps. I would try another NIC but the PC is a SFF type so needs a low profile
NIC - which I can't easily obtain :-(
Many thanks,

Zill

Don't know how helpful this is if at all.
On some M$ servers I look after I saw the same thing with Intel PRO/100
server adapters. Updated drivers sorted it.
Intel do supply *nix drivers so you might want to check out;

http://downloadfinder.intel.com/scri...strOSs=39&strT
ypes=PLU%2CDRV%2CARC%2CUTL&ProductID=60&OSFullName =Linux*&submit=Go%21

(Note link may wrap)

Hope this helps,

Patrick

Many thanks for the reply. I have already downloaded the Intel driver but
couldn't install it - probably due to my incompetence ;-)
In any event, Intel state that their driver is only for 2.4.x kernels,
whereas Mdk 10 is kernel 2.6.3, so I didn't persevere.
In the end I took the easy way out and stuck in a new Genius/Realtek PCI
NIC and it seems to work fine - apart from the fact that I had to remove
the full size metal bracket as my PC is a low profile case. Why oh why
don't the card manufacturers include _both_ lengths of bracket with their
cards?
Anyway, thanks again for your help.

Glad you got a solution to your problem.
I found this on the Intel support site for anyone who stumbles across this
thread;

Q: Do Intel's Linux* Base Drivers Support the Linux 2.6 Kernel?

A: Yes, all of our Intel Adapter base drivers support the Linux* 2.6 kernel.

Teaming support for the 2.6 kernel is provided by Channel Bonding
available in the 2.6 kernel and does not require our ANS software.

For teaming solutions prior to the 2.6 kernel, please continue to use
ANS.

Regards,
Patrick
