Hi!

Older network cards had separate transformer chip close to RJ-45 port.
Some recent network cards has transformer integrated with RJ-45 port.

What are advatanges/disadvatanges of both transformer solutions?

advatange of separate transformer chip
"Separated transformer is a little better suited
for industrial applications due to increased insulation strength,
thanks to the standard packaging of the magnetic."

advatange of integrated transformer with RJ-45 port.
"EMI radiation and radiated emission as well as near field noise coupling
are dramatically reduced as the traces between connector and LAN
transceiver IC are minimized through this integration solution. Moreover
components in-line pin save to reduce cross talk"

greetings,
zbiggy

....and fewer components mean fewer opportunities for defects, smaller
implementation footprint, easier routing (which can be important) and probably
a few other reasons why every motherboard I've designed with embedded network
host adapters in the last many years use connectors with integrated magnetics
(and leds, for that matter)...

Cheers
