Hi

I have installed linux - SUSE 9.0 - on one of my desktop computers, that was
a part of a windoze lan.

The samba client package was installed during the smooth installation, but I
cannot install the samba (server) package, no matter what I try.

Can someone please tell me what to do, I am new to linux.

What have you tried?
Did you see any error messages?

Hi

I can find the samba rpm when I put the CD #3 into the CD drive.

I click on the file and a window opens, with a bar that says "install with
YAST".

I click on the bar, a new window opens, then closes without any action.
rpm -q samba tells me that samba has not been installed.

As root:

rpm -i /path_to_directory_on_cd/samba_server_package_file.rpm

BTW: You're running Yast as root, or with root privilegies...?

I am, always have been, logged in as root.

When I follow your instruction below, nothing happens.

Now what?

When configuring and installing... Not when _using_ your computer, I hope.

Strange... My ¢50 on that there's something wrong with your media or the
Samba rpm file.

Is it trivial to make Yast fetch new packages from the net?

Have you downloaded and tested an alternative Samba rpm?

Say a prayer...? :-)

Hi

I can copy the rpm file into my /root/tmp directory, but it also does not
install from there.

This is very discouraging.

Hi

Maybe I should have told you that I am using the "personal" edition of suse
9.0.

As normal user:

wget ftp://suse.cs.utah.edu/pub/suse.com/...a-139.i586.rpm

Then as root

rpm -i /path_to_downloaded_file/samba-2.2.8a-139.i586.rpm

> This is very discouraging.

IMHO: The most discouraging part is the absence og error messages.

Hi

I found samba-2.2.8a.234 on the suse site. I'll try that one.
