Installing DSL

Attempted to install Verizon DSL. After inserting disk,
following message came up: MICROSOFT DIAL-UP NETWORKING
NOT INSTALLED OR IS CORRUPTED. I reinstall DIAL-UP with
the assistance of VERZION support & SYSTEMAX(manufacturer)
support. No luck. SYSTEMAX stats to reformat (CRAZY). Is
there patch for this for WINDOWS ME? Please help....

Uninstall Verizon software - you probably don't need it anyhow.
Run an Anti-Virus scan, and anti-spyware scan.
Uninstall DUN from the Add/Remove Programs |Windows Setup wizard - then
reboot and reinstall the same way.

Then try either phoning Verizon and persuading them to walk you through a
manual install of the dialup, or reinstall the software from disk.

You don't need dial up networking at all since you are not dialing up. You
will need your network interface card (NIC) recognized and its drivers
installed. You should check Device Manager to see if the NIC card is
installed correctly.

If it is, then you should either see, or be able to create a new Network
Connection (settings menu of main START menu). You will then need to make
sure that the TCP/IP protocol is installed for that connection.

The Verizon software is not necessary to get DSL working. In fact, it will
probably cause more headaches that is cures.

Since it appears that his service is ADSL over a USB modem, there's a very
good chance that DUN is required - but not necessarily using Verizon's
software to create it.

In the UK where ADSL is delivered using PPPOA rather than PPPOE it is quite
normal to connect to a modem using DUN.

Doesn't Verizon use PPoE?

It doesn't matter whether it's pppoe or pppoa, it is still ppp which
means using dial up networking.

Uh, not true Jim. I have SBC DSL, which uses PPoE (that's Point-to-Point
over ETHERNET), and therefore I don't have DUN installed on any of my 6
machines that share the DSL line. All I need is a properly configured
Network Connection for the NIC card of each machine.

DUN is not installed at all.

It may be that on your system (like mine here) a modem/router (or
whatever) is controlling the ppp connection (whether it's over
ethernet or atm is beside the point). But if winme is used to control
the ppp negotiation, which is what we're talking about in this thread,
then we're talking dial up networking.

Jim, if you have DSL, then you need a DSL router/modem regardless of what OS
you have on your pc. Because of this, you don't need ME to *control* the
connection, it is done by the router. One of my machines is Widows ME and
it does NOT have DUN installed on it, yet it *uses* my DSL connection.
