Considering Broadband. However, noticed that BT say pc and BB modem should
be located within 3m of telephone wall socket...and somewhere else noted
that advises best not to use BB with telephone extension cables!
Damn, if that's correct I have a prob. I have a telephone extension between
wall socket downstairs and bedroom/office upstairs.
Can anyone provide advice?
Thanks,
Pete

When I had ADSL my phone point was by the front door while my USB modem was
in the living room. I used a standard telephone extension lead from Comet, I
think. I distance along the walls and around a doorframe was about 15m but I
can't remember if the lead itself was 15m or 20m. I've disconnected it now.
Anyway, performance was absolutely fine. I thought the recommended limited
was actually 30m, not 3m.

p.s. I can't really see that after travelling perhaps 5km from the exchange
it's going to make much difference whether your extension is 3m, 5m, 10m, or
20m so long as the connections are well made. It's a bit like wondering
whether moving your Sky dish up by a few feet will improve the signal (tress
in line of sight not withstanding) :-)

Had one problem with a client's machine not synching properly with the
exchange, turned out it was his extension - it was a real cheap one with
aluminium cores. Replaced it with a slightly better quality one with copper
cores and all was fine.

WRONG (well normally anyway) the engineer can fit a DSL extension to
any point within 30mtrs cable length (the length of the longest
extension kit available).

The voice of reason, at long last....

I've known extension pieces to effectively double the line loss on a
end users service.

The tip is use good quality & not basement bargain bucket....

Agreed. But therefore the issue is about quality more than distance, within
reason. So 20m of quality copper, terminated correctly, should not be a
problem. I can't even begin to imagine where you would get aluminium leads.
3m is not a necessary limit on the length of the extension.
