Hi. Im installing a MS Virtual Server 2005 on a Windows 2003 server. MS
recommend that i use more than one network card, one for the host system and
one or more for the guest systems. There is two network cards in my server
and I just enabled the other, config it with a permanent IP adress. Is there
any guide how to do it right or is it "just like that"? I noticed that the
server now have two DNS records in the AD!

I'm using Virtual Server 2005 on my XP workstation and I'm using the
"Internal Network" (the virtual one) for all virtual machines since I don't
need my test environment to use Internet.

When sometimes I need to connect a virtual machine to Internet I just switch
the connection of the virtual NIC from the internal network to my
workstation's NIC and it works fine. Probably Microsoft recommends to use a
second adapter so you don't overload the only one (or maybe on the long term
there could be conflicts, I don't know).

You shouldn't make the second NIC register it's IP address on the DNS if you
don't want network clients to communicate with your host through that
adapter; you can disable DNS registration through the DNS tab in TCP/IP
advanced properties.

Hope it helps.

Regards,

Carlo

One NIC should work. It is not recommended to install DC on a multihomed computer. If you do, you may have a name resolution and connectivity issue. If. for some reasons you must use two NICs, you need to disable one NIC for registering WINS and DNS. this search result may help,

Jesper,

What exactly are you trying to do with this machine? You should really
only have two NICs set up if you want to use it as a router (and in that
case the NICs would be in different networks and different IP subnets).

As Robert said you should not do that on a DC. The only exception is
SBS which has wizards to cope with the multihomed problems.

hi, and thanks for the responeses. The server is not a DC, only a member
server. My idea was that the "root system" would have its own nic and all the
virtual servers would have another nic to use, to maximize network
performance. Im going to run som small servers, that users will connect to
and work on (1 user - one server) so i thought it was ideal to use virtual
server to do this.

Yes, you can do that. On the host machine, go to the network config of
the NIC which is linked to the virtual machines. Clear the check marks from
all of the boxes except "Virtual Machine Network Sevices". You could also
clear the checkbox for VMNS on the other NIC. The vms will have exclusive
use of one NIC and the host will use the other one.
